Objectives
The objective of the project was to improve the Kola (VVER 230) nuclear power plant radioactive waste management (both liquid and solid). It includes comparing radwaste conditioning options and developing recommendations for a final decision. Here, the issues of import equipment supplies as well as purchasing of the license for its production in Russia have to be considered.
Results
The following subjects have been handled and adequate upgrade solutions were elaborated:
Recommendations for Incineration facility (50 kg/h) for Novovoronezh NPP;
Estimation of the waste quantities and composition (Novovoronezh and Kola);
Waste management (Novovoronezh and Kola) methodology;
Comparison of the Russian regulations and standards to the recommended internationally used have been performed;
Analysis of the used methods for waste collection, treatment and storage;
Proposals regarding improvements of waste management, collection and storage;
Final proposals (for Novovoronezh=[N], for Kola=[K]):
[N] Modification of the evaporator (deep evaporator, 500 l/h);
[N] Feasibility study for solidification of salt block generated by the evaporator;
[N] Providing for a cementation facility for solidification of liquid radioactive waste and ion exchange resins;
[N] Providing for an incineration facility for treatment of solid burnable wastes;
[N+K] Feasibility study regarding to sludge/mud treatment;
[N] Feasibility study regarding to the discharge of the existing storage for solid radioactive waste;
[K] Modification of the incineration facility - improvement of the feeding system (human health, safety).
